Formally a Russian
territory, the Ukraine has won its independence and is working hard to build a tourist industry.
One of the most popular activities the country has to offer is world class
skiing in the Carpathian Mountains. The
tourist and Ukraine skiing industries are both young but visitors will find the country offers great skiing for economical prices.
The Ukraine skiing industry
is hoping to see the same results that Romania has experienced since
opening several ski resorts in the Carpathians.
The Ukraine
is perfect for a family skiing holiday. Skiing trips in the Ukraine is still priced extremely
competative. The prices haven't risen as much as other ski destinations. the standard of
ski resorts are high and very popular.
The Carpathian ski resorts are the most popular.
Ukraine offers fantastic ski deals, keep an eye out as they offer a very high standard of ski
deals. Some of the most popular ski
destinations are Slavsko, centrally located on Kyviv-Uzhhorod railroad.
Slavsko is approximatly 125km drive from Lviv. It is the most popular resort of the Carpathian ski
resorts.
There is also Bukovel which is located about 125km from Ivano-Frankivsk and is easily accessible by
motorcar or buses. Tysovets is another one of Ukraines top ski resorts,
approximatly 155km from Lviv.
Lift Information
More lifts are constantly being built at Ukraine
skiing areas. With the growing ski industry additional lifts are becoming a necessity.
Currently, visitors who come to ski Ukraine slopes will find lines on the
weekends during the busy season –from January to March.
Many hotels and inns offer packages that include
lift ticket options. Unless you purchase one of the options you will have to wait and get your
lift tickets on site. They are not sold in advance.
Cross Country Skiing
The Ukraine, with its growing ski industry,
offers both alpine and cross-country skiing. All of the Ukraine skiing areas offer cross-country ski
tours. Outfitters provide a guide and guests can rent cross-country
skiing equipment.
Cross-country tours are currently only scheduled
for one day of skiing. Your cross-country Ukraine skiing adventure
will take you through some of the world’s most beautiful mountainous areas in the Carpathian
Mountains.
Types of Accommodations
Because of the newness of the Ukraine skiing
industry there are very few actual ski resorts. Most ski areas offer inns, guesthouse, hotels, and
hostels surrounding the mountain slopes. Accommodations are comfortable
and inexpensive. Guests will feel right at home when staying at one of these lovely locations.
Bukovel is one of the few ski resorts in the
Ukrainian mountains. It offers modern conveniences, cross-country tours, comfortable
accommodations, rentals, and many fun après ski activities. A new sixty
million dollar resort is being built near Bystrets and is set to open within the next year.
Best Way to Get There
If you are coming to ski Ukraine you will want to
arrive by plane. The Kyiv Boryspil International Airport offers daily flights from many of
Europe’s larger cities. Budapest, London, Rome, Milan, Munich, Prague,
and Warsaw all offer daily flight service to and from Ukraine.
Once your plane has landed the best way to get to
your ski area and accommodations is by train. Train service is very popular in the Ukraine and
guests are advised to book their train tickets up to one week in advance.
Car rental is also available at the airport but driving in the Ukraine is tricky and not advised.
Après Ski
After a day of Ukraine skiing you will find
fabulous activities and nightlife near the skiing areas. Restaurants, bars, and clubs surround the ski
areas and offer some of the Ukraine’s hippest entertainment. After a day
of skiing you can sit back and enjoy a horilka with pepper, a traditional vodka
drink in the Ukraine.
